Making his debut on November 8th 1920 in the Daily Express, illustrator Mary Tourtel introduced the world to Rupert Bear. A resident of Nutwood, he lived with his family and had friends close by. Her stories of friendship, adventure and sometimes magic, all drew you in and still do today. Still featuring in the Daily Express, his cartoon strip is one of the longest running in a newspaper internationally.
Rupert has also featured in Annuals since 1936, yet in 1973 it all changed or rather Rupert did. Due to costing, a decision was made to keep Rupert the same as the unprinted page – white and it is this version, that he is more readily recognised.
Rupert is 33cm / 13″ in size and is three-way jointed (head and arms). He has been sewn from sumptuous white alpaca, with glossy black eyes and a smart hand stitched white nose and black mouth. With his slightly over-large ears he has the most charismatic expression and adorable face. Keeping true to the annuals, Rupert is dressed in a knitted red jumper with yellow checked trousers and matching scarf, finished by lace up white shoes.
As we are celebrating Rupert’s 100th Birthday, this Rupert has something special. A concealed, turn-key music box that plays the tune “Rupert, Rupert the Bear”. It was originally sung by Jackie Lee for his 1970’s TV series and became so popular, that in 1971 the song reached number 14 in the UK pop charts.
This fabulous piece of childhood memorabilia is a UK and Ireland Exclusive of only 1,000 pieces. He will come to you boxed with his numbered certificate of authenticity.
