Margarete Steiff was a remarkable woman, who led the most inspirational life, shaping history as she lived. She was born in 1847 a perfectly healthy baby girl, but at 18 months old, she contracted polio, which left her wheelchair bound with a weak arm. This however did not deter her and she was exceptionally driven. At school she was lifted up and down the stairs to the classroom, ensuring her chance with an education, then gained employment as a seamstress for her sister’s dressmaking shop, before long, with the help of her brother, she had her own shop and was even able to employ others, as her ready-to-wear clothing business boomed. Always on the lookout for her next challenge, she came upon a pattern for a wool felt elephant. She decided to gift these to friends, but they were never used for their intended ‘pin cushion’ purpose, but as soft toys for children. Soon she was being asked to create other animals and in 1880 the foundation for Margarete Steiff GmbH was officially laid. This gorgeous bear commemorates, what would have been her 175th Birthday, courtesy of the German, master teddy bear makers themselves, Steiff.
Margarete is a 30 cm / 11.8″, fully jointed teddy bear. Her marvellous coat is sewn from the finest, luxuriously dense, cream mohair, with co-ordinating warm wool felt paws. She has emotive, glossy black eyes, with a hand stitched, taupe nose and mouth on her professionally trimmed muzzle, resulting in such an appealing face. Printed upon her left paw pad is 24.07.1847, her birthdate, with her name Margarete on her right. Around her neck sits a double bow of blue satin and elegant, cream lace, which features a gold rimmed, white upon blue image of the company’s first logo (1897), as a cameo pendant, which has been secured at the knot of the joint
bows.
